Remembering My Dad

Recently I was rummaging through some boxes in my closet when I came across a few of the items I have from my Dad. He passed away in 1999 and I had forgotten that I had taken these as mementos when we cleaned out his house. I found his harmonica, rosary beads and ID bracelet. The harmonica and rosary beads went with him to war where he served in the Army and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. I knew right away that somehow I was going to use these to make a still life of things to remember him by.

Squirreled away in other nooks and crannies I found his National Ski Patrol pin (he was an avid skier who lived for a time in Vermont) And a few of the carved birds he had brought me from his travels to Mexico. After more searching I realized that I didn’t have many pictures of him. I wish I had been a better chronicler of the family.

He was living in Hilton Head when he died and my brother and I were fortunate that he had just finished spending a few days in Connecticut so that I had just seen him. The image below is what I have left of him. I’ll keep it safe.
