Freedom!

Freedom to explore creative ways of using the camera.  Freedom to break away from hard and fast rules.  Freedom to create images that challenge the viewer to find meaning based on what they see in an image  and how an image makes them feel.  Freedom of expression.

Freedom doesn’t always come easily to this septuagenarian who has spent a life-time learning and following the ‘rules.’  But thanks to some close photographer friends, I’m learning to put a little more ‘play’ (freedom) in my photography while striving to challenge both myself and the viewer.

“Remember, art is a journey, not a destination.  Give yourself room to experiment, embrace the challenge and your photography will evolve into a true expression of yourself.”   Eva Polak, Photographer

“Try to forget what objects you have before you – a tree, a house, a field, or whatever.  Merely think, ‘Here is a little square of blue, here an oblong of pink, here a streak of yellow,’ and paint it  just as it looks to you, the exact color and shape, until it gives you your own impression of the scene before you.”  attributed to Claude Monet

“Abstraction is inherent in the photographic medium and through abstraction the photographer exercises choices that carry photography beyond record-realism to the expression of his or her personal viewpoint.”  attributed to Barbara Morgan, Photographer

“It’s surprising how little visual information is required to convey enough for the viewer to understand and appreciate the image.”  Eva Polak, Photographer
