The magnolias were blooming in front of my house so I grabbed my camera and headed out. I shot for a while and then looked on the back of my camera to discover that everything was shot at least three stops underexposed. Yeah, almost black. I corrected and reshot everything. I know a lot of you can commiserate.
However, when I finally brought them into Lightroom and upped the exposure on the darkest ones, I was actually quite taken with them.
So, of course, I went out and repeated the process.
They had a glowy other-worldliness that I felt drawn to.
A lot of what we artists do is often a happy accident. I like to try different techniques and never consider it a failure if it doesn’t work. It just adds to the knowledge I have about a certain medium. And every once and a while I’m happily surprised by the result.
