After a wonderful, inspiring, art-filled experience at SlowExposures, I recently participated in a series of photowalks. While FUN is a key component in nearly all photowalks, often a little friendly competition additionally plays a role.
The first photowalk was the North Georgia Camera Club Council’s annual “Shootout,” held this year in Marietta GA. Along with 8 others from our area, I participated on a team representing Brentwood Photography Group. In all, the Shootout had over 200 participants!
The five extremely challenging topics assigned for the Shootout and the lack of familiarity of Marietta area severely hampered my personal productivity. I’ll add that it also was a rainy day. “Mama told me there’d be days like this!”
Interestingly enough, my favorite image from this outing has recently been juried in to a SNAP (Society of Nashville Artistic Photographers) exhibit.
The next week-end was the annual Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk. Any photowalk led by Dick Dougall – this year in Columbia TN – always draws a lot of interest primarily because he really ‘kicks things up a notch.’ In addition to the standard photowalk experience, Dick adds an exhibit, a juror talk, a keepsake photo book, and a whole lot of food, fellowship, and FUN.
You can join me in keeping my fingers crossed that my submitted image will be included in the Columbia exhibit. If not, well…”Mama said there’d be days like this.”
Last week-end I went on yet another photowalk, this time with members of the Brentwood Photography Group. With our cameras we explored a section of ’12th Avenue South’ in Nashville. I found it interesting to learn how many of our club members joined me in being unfamiliar with that area of Nashville.
The weather was beautiful; the fellowship with other photographers was grand. The photography was…well, (honestly) less than stellar on my part. “Mama said there’d be days like this.” But you know what? I had FUN!
As hard as I study and work toward reaching my photographic goals, I still firmly believe in having FUN with my photography.
Yes. “Mama said there’d be days like this.” Days when it’s raining. Days when our results aren’t meeting our expectations. Days when our goals seem unreachable. But I think Mama would tell me to hang in there, have FUN, and enjoy the photographic journey!
